Gallery Visit: California Light and Space
This summer The David Zwirner gallery in Los Angeles exhibited a special show that spoke to our California roots and featured a number of our favorite artists.
Titled “California Light and Space (The 21st Century Version)”, the exhibit drew upon the works of 17 local artists who crafted interpretations of their relationship with their surrounding environments. Curated by Helen Molesworth, the show was conceived as a modern twist of the Light and Space movement which originated in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, artists such as John McLaughlin, James Turrell, Robert Irwin, and Larry Bell crafted unconventional expressions and installations using commercial materials that altered light, volume and perception.
In today’s exploration, the works spoke personally to each artist and how Los Angeles’ unique geography and ecosystem informs their practice. Hilary Pecis, an artist who we’ve had the honor to work with, showed two paintings, LA Afternoon, 2026 and Silverlake Hills, 2025/2026 which highlight a slice of life in Silverlake. A vibrant dot painting by Jennifer Guidi featured a bold color story of the CA coastline and an installation by Sonia Boyajian (also a collaborator of ours) brought to life a dining scape filled with moments of local cuisine. Two paintings by Mr. Wash were especially impactful. A self-taught artist who was wrongfully convicted felon and granted clemency after 21 years in prison, Mr. Wash's paintings depicted his surroundings in Compton as a young adult.
The exhibit closed on August 1st but can be viewed here.
